Movie Storyline Ponniyin Selvan 2022

Ponniyin Selvan 2022 title comes under the genre of historical fiction. This is a story written by Kalki Krishnamurthy about the power struggle during the Chozha rule between ADs 900 and 950. The three main points of the plot are the ruler Sundara Chozhan and his sons Adithya Karikalan and Arulmozhivarman (who later ruled Rajaraja Chozhan). The conspiracies and the struggle for power between the main characters and those around them form the basis of this story.

Movie Short Overview

The upcoming Indian Tamil-language epic period drama film Ponniyin Selvan: I is also known as PS-I.  This movie is directed and co-produced by Mani Ratnam, under his production studio Madras Talkies, along with Allirajah Subaskaran under the banner Lyca Productions. The film is written by Ratnam along with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. It is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan.

Earlier, established actors and directors from the film fraternity  planned for the adaptation of the novel,  and also the novel gained popularity.  Unfortunately, did not materialize due to several reasons. Meanwhile, M. G. Ramachandran failed all attempts after then Mani Ratnam unsuccessfully tried to adapt the novel. Ratnam revived the adaptation in January 2019, Stating it as his “dream project”. Finally, Lyca Productions is being brought on board for funding the project. Besides, With several changes in the cast and crew, the film went into production in mid-December.

 Ponniyin Selvan 2022 Movie Review

Finally, after a wait, the new year marks a new beginning for Mani Ratnam’s much-awaited take on a classic of Tamil literature — Ponniyin Selvan. The story is set in the 10th century during a tumultuous time in the Chola Empire when the power struggle between different branches of the ruling family caused violent rifts between the potential successors to the reigning emperor.

The film, an epic in all respects, will feature an ensemble cast that includes Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Amala Paul, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Sarath Kumar, and Prabhu, with AR Rahman providing the musical score.  O the other hand, there is also a controversy that arose when several Hindu organizations demand the arrest of Trisha for shooting on the premises of the temple, with her footwear on.

Movie Production Information

Earlier, in 1958, M. G. Ramachandran announced Ponniyin Selvan, a film adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s historical novel of the same name. Unfortunately, Ramachandran met with an accident before the shooting could begin. However, the wound took six months to heal but Ramachandran was unable to continue with the film even after renewing the rights four years later.

Mani Ratnam stated that during his career adapting the novel was one of his “dream projects”. Above all,  he had this hope always to work on. Whatever Ratnam revealed that he worked on a first draft of the film alongside actor-director Kamal Haasan.  he had bought the rights to the novel, but at the time the pair shelved their plan as the project did not make financial sense. Finally, Ratnam renewed his interest in the project and worked alongside writer Jeyamohan to finalize the script for the film adaptation of Ponniyin Selvan.

Set in the 9th century, the film revolves around the early life of Chola Prince Arulmozhi Varman who was later known as the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola. He was the most powerful king of his time, in South India, chiefly remembered for reinstating the Chola power and ensuring its supremacy in South East Asia and the Indian Ocean. The story begins with Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan and narrates his adventurous journey. Most of the characters in the film are introduced through him.

Queen Nandini, the wife of Commander of the Chola Army, Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, moves on a mission to kill Aditya Karikalan and help her husband to ascend the throne. While Arulmozhivarman discovers several secrets about conspiracy planned by the ministers and Nandini, Vandiyadevan is assigned to bring the prince Arulmozhivarman from Sri Lanka to save the throne.

Ratnam cast Vijay in the leading role of Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan. Mahesh Babu was cast as Arulmozhi Varman. he later becomes the Chola emperor Rajaraja I in the project, and also expressed his delight at being selected by Ratnam. Meanwhile, Sathyaraj was signed to play a supporting role in the film.

Ratnam had also considered other actors including Vikram, Suriya, and Vishal but they eventually did not make the final cast. Arya also joined the project to play a third leading male role after the script was narrated to him. On the other hand,  Anushka Shetty is final for the leading female role. Otherwise, they also discuss with Priyanka Chopra and Asin Thottumkal in regard to other characters.

Therefore, there is also a cast of Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Jayaram, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Vikram Prabhu, and Ashwin Kakumanu while R. Sarathkumar, R. Parthiban, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and others appear in supporting roles.

Therefore, the film’s music is composed by A. R. Rahman, and Ravi Varman handled the cinematography. On the other hand,  A. Sreekar Prasad did the editing, and production design by Thota Tharani respectively. Moreover, The film score and soundtrack were composed by Mani Ratnam’s norm composer A. R. Rahman.

Earlier, Rahman told that two of the songs were written by Kabilan. Above all, Singer Harini confirmed in an interview that she has rendered her voice for one of the songs in the film. Otherwise, Lyricist Kabilan confirmed that Shreya Ghoshal sang a song in the film and shared his experience working with Ratnam, Rahman, and Ghoshal. Therefore, during the film’s shooting in Hyderabad the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) filed a lawsuit against Mani Ratnam in connection with the death of a horse allegedly. However, An official from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India complained to the local officials against Ratnam. Besides, his production house Madras Talkies and the owner of the horse under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals  Act and Indian Penal Code, said that several horses were continuously used for hours on the film set due to which the animals were tired and dehydrated.

On the other hand, the Indian Chief Advocatory Officer Khushboo Gupta from PETA raised objections against Mani Ratnam. She is saying that “In the age of computer-generated imagery (CGI), production companies have no excuse for forcing exhausted horses to play at war until one of them drops dead” and felt that “Compassionate.
